We’re a week into the New Year and I haven’t made the mistake yet of writing 2011 on the logbooks. So far so good! Our trip to Indy went smooth with no weather issues. We can’t ask for more than that during this time of the year. We’ve been blessed with unseasonably warm weather since we got here. We unloaded Friday morning and soon afterward the company called to ask if we’d be interested in doing a little short, local run. In less than two hours we had made an additional $390. They really pay well on those in order to get people to do them, I can only assume. So the weekend is ours to do with as we please as we will be getting another load from here on Monday morning. I believe that will be a load of pipe going down to Memphis.
Jorge and I are taking advantage of the warmer temps and extra time by getting in some uncharacteristic exercise. We have an ongoing bet with my brother Steve and his girlfriend, Francis as to which couple can lose the most weight collectively by the time we come back to Las Vegas sometime this summer in June or July. I mention this to add to the accountability. You may not recognize us in six months! We’re counting calories, walking, and doing sit-ups - all of which are pretty much foreign to us! There is a lot on the line though. The couple that loses the most weight will have their trip to Hawaii we are planning together paid for by the other. With an incentive like that, we’re sticking to it and are determined to win! Okay, we’re only a week into it but you can tell we are serious by the ‘no-fat ice cream’ that sits in the freezer.
So that’s the short story on the start of our year. We’ve been told by other drivers from this company that work tends to slow down in the winter so that may be the case for us too. We’re doing our best to find loads that stay to the south though with the weight of our big truck and trailer, we don’t often have many options. We go where the lighter loads take us. However, we’ve seen very little snow this year and want to keep it that way!
I didn't take too many pictures this week but here are a few of them from one of my favorite trips along the old Route 66. (Click on them to enlarge.)
