A couple weeks ago when we were in Florida, we stopped to have the leaky radiator looked at. The mechanic told us we needed a new radiator and that it would take him four days to fix it. That’s why we decided to just take it back to the mechanic in Las Vegas who always gets it right in the shop when we show up. They ran the necessary tests there and couldn’t find anything wrong with it other than replacing the cap. Jorge thought maybe we should just go ahead and change the belts while it was in the shop as we have never changed them since we bought this truck going on two years ago. Can you believe that when we were about 300 yards from the entrance of the Volvo dealership, the belt broke on it? If this had happened anywhere else, it would have been upsetting. But here we’d just come from one coast to the other and up thru a desert windstorm to Las Vegas, and it breaks down right there? That was a miracle to us! All in all it didn’t take long to fix and we within a couple days we were back on the road.
We were lucky to get a load right out of Las Vegas going down to LA. We didn’t think we’d get another load so quickly but just before the end of the day, the need arose for a team to do a hot load from LA to McAlester, Oklahoma. It turned out to be the lightest load we ever moved… only 600 lbs which also gave us excellent fuel mileage in spite of the windy conditions. We hustled that load of airplane parts nearly nonstop to Spirit Aerosystems where they were waiting on us when we delivered it about 3 o’clock this morning.
We met our friends Tom and Mary Robinson for lunch today before leaving McAlester. We used to work with them at our previous company before they retired to build their country home out of shipping containers. Now that their building project is pretty much complete, they’ve got all kinds of time on their hands and drove an hour over to see us today so that was very nice and thoughtful of them. By the way, Mary wrote a blog of their building adventure that you can check out if you're interested. After alot of hard work, their home turned out very nice. http://myshippingcontainerhome.blogspot.com/ Jorge and I often toy with similar ideas but it will be a few more years before we are able to retire. We do enjoy this job and lifestyle.
Next on our agenda is a trip about 170 south to the Red River Army Depot near a little town called Hooks, Texas. Bright and early Monday morning we will be picking up an army tank that needs to be refurbished and will be taking it up near Pittsburgh, PA. We’re doing our best to stay south and Pittsburgh is NOT on our list of places we’d like to visit this winter. However the load paid well so we agreed to do it. We are praying any bad weather holds off until we leave. This winter is unprecedented. We haven’t seen a flake of snow so far this month. We are praying our luck holds! C’mon spring!
