Our trip to San Francisco was supposed to be a fast one. We were pulling the trailer that needed to arrive at the theater first so the sooner we could get there, the better. We sped the whole way from Denver… hammer down – as we truckers like to say! We ran thru a few snow flurries along the way in the higher elevations but nothing much to speak of… until we hit the California state line. It was snowing so hard in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and we kept hearing about the tire chain requirements up ahead on the CB radio. We couldn’t believe it!! In May??? Surely they must be joking. Unfortunately it was no joke and for the first time in our trucking career, we had to bust out the tire chains to get over the mountain pass. Probably the worst part of it was that fact that we had just dropped off all our winter gear at our storage trailer in Ohio last week. We had no boots, gloves, or even a winter coat to wear. It was a nightmare as well as a learning experience. We now kind of know what we’re doing when it comes to putting chains on but we learned we better get some more of them too. We had just enough to satisfy the California Highway Patrol but in a worse storm, we wouldn’t have had enough of them. Live and learn!
I had to check the calendar and make sure it was really May and not January. The snow was pretty up in the mountains but that's about all I can say about it.
