It’s now February and I still have to get the white out on my logbooks to scratch out the ’09 I keep putting instead of the ’10. I remember sometime back in the eighty’s trying to figure out how old I would be in the year 2000 and that seemed so far off in the distance. Now it’s ten years behind us. Yikes! Time flies when you’re having fun. Guess I’m just thinking about my upcoming birthday this month plus having a daughter who will soon be thirty years old kind of puts it all in perspective too. I remember when I thought that was old! It’s time to put away the Miss Clairol and let those silver hairs shine. Afterall, there are plenty of grey-haired lady truckers out here on the road. I won’t be the only one. I’ll see how far it gets before I have to break out the hair color again.
The Des Moines to Hartford trip went well with no snow at all in Hartford. That is one of my favorite theaters to go to because it is bordered on one side by the beautiful Connecticut state capitol building and on the other side is one of those huge pieces of property that somebody had the foresight many years ago to leave for a downtown park. It’s always filled with people out walking and playing with their dogs and Rocky seems to recognize it every time we pull up next to it.
Our next stop was only 250 miles away in Syracuse, NY. We could see on the weather map they were having some mighty cold temps along with lake effect snow so we were in no hurry to get over there. We had five days to get there afterall. We decided to stay in Connecticut for a few more days until the cold and snow caught up with us there. It finally did and so we decided we may as well get over to our destination and could sit in the cold and snow in New York just as well. We took the back country scenic route thru lots of quaint little New England towns. It’s a trip we’d like to make again when the weather is nicer and we can stop to poke around in the cool shops in their little downtown areas. That’s when we learned for sure what we’d been suspecting for some time. The truck was not putting out any heat and the thermostat seemed to be the problem. With outside temps in the 5 to 10 range, we had to get it fixed. We were lucky enough to find a shop with some mechanics who took pity on us and were willing to fix it up just before they closed up shop for the weekend. It didn’t take them long and we were back in business. I’ve started to notice a trend lately – that is every time we bobtail to the next town, we’re having to seek out a repair shop to fix the next problem. I hope that’s not what they call ‘nickel and diming’ us to death. It can’t be because it’s costing way more than that.
I’m writing this tonight from Tampa, FL. We just arrived about midnight and will wait to get our trailer unloaded about 8 in the morning. We hauled the sound equipment for the “Wicked” show all 1200+ miles. Our plans this week include a visit with my sister, Linda, and also will stop by to see some of our trucking buddies who are taking a month or two off while Don recovers from surgery. Next stop – Charlotte, NC by next Sunday.
