It was a longer trip from San Francisco to Tempe than we had planned. With the interstate 5 shut down completely due to snow, we were left with only one alternative, California state route 58. As I was making the turn to get on this road, the ominous sign flashed ahead…ROAD CLOSED. We were lucky to find a place to park and so we did. There we sat – us and every other truck driver that needed to get to the LA area that morning. We discussed our options and decided to take advantage of the break. So we went to sleep for a few hours. When we woke up, even more traffic was waiting around us and the road was still closed. Finally about seven hours after we first parked there, they finally removed the barriers and the race was on. We should have been in Tempe by this time and here we were still sitting in south central California. It was a long ride but we made it the rest of the way with no problems. It was the first time we’ve ever been late for a delivery – but it wasn’t our fault. Thankfully no tire chains were used in the process and that’s the most important thing to us!
We had a few things to do to keep us busy during our time in the southwest. Our truck had to go back to the shop for a couple days. Nothing major, just a little of this and that which adds up quickly at the $100 an hour the mechanics charge. They never work fast enough for me. The Arizona weather was fabulous while we were there - cold nights for good sleeping and warm days to enjoy the dog park and other things. We spent an enjoyable afternoon visiting my godparents Bill and Pat Bein, who live in Sun City, a nearby suburb of Phoenix.
Too soon it was time to get the show on the road and gear up for our next trip. We’re taking ‘Shrek’ from Tempe to Kansas City right now. It’s a bitter north wind blowing out here on the Texas and Oklahoma plains tonight and I miss the warmth of Arizona already. I’m looking at a weather map that shows we will definitely be driving in snow in Kansas before we reach our destination. The show will deliver to the theater tomorrow and we’ll be on our way over to Washington D.C. by next weekend.
